Pan-Canadian Healthy Living Strategy Consultations
The Alder Group carried out a National Consultation on an Integrated Pan-Canadian Healthy Living Strategy on behalf of Health Canada and the provincial/territorial ministries of health. This assignment required extensive background in the broad social determinants of health and the Canadian health system as a whole. Key activities included: three pre-consultation meetings; nine regional roundtables; preparation of the consultation workbooks (English and French), including one for Aboriginal audiences; development of a project and public web site (including background materials, glossary, meeting information, online registration and online consultation workbook); analysis and preparation of summary reports from the roundtables and the workbook submissions; logistical management for consultation meetings; preliminary program development for the national symposium; writing draft strategy document for discussion at symposium; project evaluation; and support for the consultation follow-up. Approximately 370 delegates attended the roundtables and 945 workbooks were submitted online.
Hepatitis C Prevention, Support and Research Program
During the mid-term program evaluation of the Hepatitis C Prevention, Support and Research Program, Health Canada identified youth at risk as a group at particular risk of contracting hepatitis C. To determine the most effective means to reach them with a message on prevention of transmission of the virus, The Alder Group carried out a three-phase project, including: an information review, which analyzed programs and materials directed to youth at risk; interviews with intermediaries dealing with youth at risk; and five focus groups with youth at risk, conducted in cities across Canada, along with a sixth focus group was held with youth intermediaries.
Building Healthier Children (Canadian Living Foundation - Breakfast for Learning)
The Alder Group planned, managed, developed the program and all supporting materials, and carried out all phases of this national bilingual consultation and dialogue sponsored by Breakfast for Learning. This initiative was focused on enhancing nutritional health for children in Canada by promoting best practices in school-based programs. The assignment involved a series of regional workshops across Canada, and community consultations and dialogues with groups and individuals. A literature review was carried out and a workbook was created to allow individuals and communities to participate online, by fax or by mail. The meetings were held in both official languages and involved participants from Aboriginal communities, isolated areas, and different cultures and backgrounds, as well as a variety of sectors. An information management and analysis framework was designed to guide the project. As with other similar projects, The Alder Group also designed a web site that was instrumental in the success of the project and allowed all The Alder Group team members, CLF staff and stakeholders across the country to stay informed around all aspects of the project. The project culminated in a national consensus-building summit that was attended by nutrition and policy experts from across the country as well as community participants.
The Government of Canada Stakeholder Consultations on the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC)
The Alder Group facilitated a national bilingual consultation on the FCTC and produced the meeting report (in English and French) on behalf of Health Canada, to seek views on priorities for Canada’s future international negotiations on the FCTC. This highly sensitive consultation involved all stakeholders including government representatives, non-governmental health and advocacy organizations, labor unions and the tobacco industry. The Alder Group event planners and facilitators demonstrated their ability to handle conflicting multi-stakeholder perspectives. This meeting was the first of its kind where both health and tobacco industry stakeholders attended and worked together. A project web site was developed to facilitate the communications for this project, and was instrumental in keeping both the consulting team and the clients informed about all aspects of the project, and made all background information readily available. The Alder Group carried out many of the tasks for ensuring a smooth process for a sensitive consultation.
